'Rockingham' had previously won the St Leger in 1833, and this painting may date from this time, as Herring was a prolific painter of successful racehorses. Theobald then bought him and had several more victories, including at Goodwood, after which he and 'Rockingham' were painted together by James Ward. 'Rockingham' was then a stallion in Theobald’s stud.
This, and Barenger’s depiction of the Theobald Stud, were among paintings which came to Brodsworth Hall through the marriage of Theobald’s granddaughter, Georgiana, with Charles Sabine Thellusson.
