Robert Taylor was a woolstapler and third son of Stephen and Mary Taylor of the Manor House, Stanbury, just outside Haworth. Stephen was a trustee of Haworth Church, and instrumental in Branwell's father Patrick's appointment to the living. The painting is very similar in style and form to many of Branwell's other portraits, and the depiction of Robert bears a strong family resemblance to the portrait of his sister Maria, painted at around the same time.
