This is probably one of Branwell Brontë's practice works: his teacher William Robinson encouraged him to copy from prints of the Old Masters as part of his training. Although the painting is now in poor condition and it is difficult to see the classical landscape clearly, it is one of his more sophisticated works, probably painted around 1838, when he set himself up as a portrait painter in Bradford. It was a venture that proved unsuccessful.
