James Burras spent most of his life in Wortley near Leeds but in his sixties moved to Beverley with his wife and granddaughter. The move was undoubtedly to follow his son Thomas Ellis Burras who was an established headteacher in the town. In Beverley, Burras immersed himself in local cultural life, including exhibiting some of his works done in West Yorkshire (illustrations of the Crimea War) at the Temperance Hall on Well Lane. There are five works by James Burras in the Beverley Art Gallery collection, mostly dating from the fifteen or so years he spent in Beverley. Burras is recorded as an 'artist' in the 1892 Bulmer’s Beverley Directory but his death is registered in Leeds. Interestingly, James Burras' father, Thomas Burras (1790–1870) was also a professional artist whilst his son Thomas Ellis (1844–1911) exhibited in local art competitions.
