Charles, 8th Earl Cadogan, commissioned this portrait to mark the time he served as President of the Board of General Purposes of the United Grand Lodge of England, the governing body of Freemasonry in England and Wales. He held the position from 1999 to 2004. In the background of this portrait is a map of the Chelsea area of London, much of which is owned by Cadogan Estates. The initials ‘DL’ in the title refer to his position as Deputy Lieutenant. The Earl Cadogan was Deputy Lieutenant of Greater London in 1996. He presented the portrait to the United Grand Lodge of England, and it is one of a series of portraits of past presidents of the Board of General Purposes.
