Fiennes (1864–1935), 1st Baron Cornwallis, was Deputy Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England, the governing body of Freemasonry in England and Wales, from 1926 to 1935. In 1935 he was promoted to Pro Grand Master, the representative of the Grand Master when he is unable to attend meetings, but died before he was able to take office. He was also Provincial Grand Master of Kent from 1905 to 1935. Provincial grand masters are the Grand Master’s representatives in the Masonic provinces, which roughly equate to counties. In this portrait he is wearing the regalia of that office. The Province of Kent commissioned the portrait and presented it to him. It was his grandson, Fiennes, 3rd Baron Cornwallis, who gave it to the United Grand Lodge of England in 1990.
