A simple and direct half-length portrait of Nelson’s grandfather, to the right, in clerical dress and a white dress-wig, and looking directly ahead to meet the gaze of the viewer. It is inscribed ‘Maurice Suckling D D Born 1675 Died 1730’, and is a later copy of a portrait made posthumously in 1775. It is one of a pair with BHC3043, a portrait of his wife.
