The sculpture features four figures important to Selby's history: a Monk (referencing Abbot Benedict and the Abbey); a Miller (referencing Selby's agricultural links, and the mills that used to line the River Ouse); a Miner (recalling the Selby Coalfield); and a Marine Engineer (representing the 500 years of shipbuilding on the Ouse). The figures surmount a plinth of hand-made bricks designed to show a river wave or aegir. The sculpture is set in a garden dedicated to the memory of Jeremy Hodgson 1960–1998.
