'Rataplan' came into Thellusson’s ownership in 1850, possibly marking the marriage of his son, Charles Sabine Thellusson, to Georgiana Theobald, granddaughter of John Theobald. After Theobald’s death in 1849, his son William sold all the horses from his stud except a mare, 'Pocahontas'. Her foal, 'Rataplan', was born the day in 1850 that William died, shortly after Georgiana’s wedding. 'Rataplan' won 42 races out of 71, and then became a successful stallion at stud.
It is not known who the gentleman holding 'Rataplan' in the painting is. He could be Charles Thellusson’s brother, Seymour, as Charles was ill at the time, or the trainer, Parr, who sometimes partly-owned the horse and was responsible for his racing successes.
