Self-taught artist John Allin made his mark within what is today considered the Folk/Outsider Art movement in Britain, adopting a naive style and drawing on memories of his East End childhood to capture a fast-disappearing era. This work depicts the Anti-Fascist rally known as the 'Battle of Cable Street', which took place in East London in 1936 when the community – Jewish, communist, socialist, anarchist, and Irish groups united as one in the battle against Fascism – turned out in force to protest against the British Union of Fascists, known as the Blackshirts, led by Oswald Mosley. At Gardiners' Corner, protestors stand firm, waving banners worded with slogans such as 'They Shall Not Pass', 'East End Unite', and 'No Nazis Here'.

The print was made in 1975 when many Jewish people had left or were leaving the East End for the suburbs and nostalgically serves as a reminder of the era when a thriving Jewish community, rich in culture and tradition, resided in East London.
