Self-taught artist John Allin made his mark within what is today considered the Folk/Outsider Art movement in Britain, adopting a naive style and drawing on memories of his East End childhood to capture a fast-disappearing era. Unusually in this scene, there are no precise street names but Allin conjures up a vibrant East End Market Scene bustling with lively stalls and shops – many with Jewish names, such as Mrs Levitt’s famous shoe shop – selling everything including food, clothing, footwear, crockery and wallpaper, suggesting that this is the famous Petticoat Lane Market area, based at Wentworth Street and Middlesex Street in Spitalfields, and still extant today.
