David Bates, a mathematician and theoretical physicist, was educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution, Queen’s University and University College, London, where he was appointed a lecturer and reader at the college in 1951. In the same year he returned to Queen’s, where he held a number of professorial posts until his retirement in 1982, including the professorship of applied mathematics (1951–1968), the professorship of physics (1968–1974) and a research professorship (1976–1982). A vice-president of the Royal Irish Academy and a fellow of the Royal Society, he received a knighthood in 1978, in recognition of his services to science. The portrait, three-quarter length, shows Bates seated, looking directly out of the canvas, as if about to engage in conversation or address his students.
