The achievements of Professor Dowking's distinguished career are considerable. He made seminal contributions to the understanding, behaviour and design of steel structures. He was consultant to the design team for the Thames Barrier and the Hutton Field tension leg platform, both of which received the Queen’s Award. In 2001 he was awarded the CBE. During his term as Vice-Chancellor he initiated a 'Per Cent' for art scheme which enabled the University to build up its art collection, particularly sculpture. June Mendoza is a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. She started life classes at the age of fourteen and by seventeen was working as an artist producing book jackets, magazine illustrations and some portraits. Her commissioned work includes a number of portraits of the Queen and members of the royal family, foreign dignitaries and a wide range of portraits of personalities from the arts, music, government, business and the professions.
