Gordon Donaldson was born in Edinburgh in 1913, but his father was born in Yell, and he himself became a regular visitor to the island. Educated at the University of Edinburgh, he later returned there and was, from 1963 to 1979, Professor of Scottish History and Palaeography. He was also the author of several books on Shetland. Upon retiring he was appointed Her Majesty's Historiographer Royal for Scotland, a position which he held until his death in 1993.

Dobson's career spanned almost 60 years, and he is best known for his portraits; at least 140 of them are known to exist, many of them being of members of the aristocracy, or holders of office in public life.
