Fitton was a great documenter of London life that he observed; the streets, cafes, and in this case, in a gallery. His work as an illustrator and cartoonist fed into his paintings and there is an element of mockery and caricature in the present work, as the throng of people at the private view depicted, tuck into their drinks and exchange pleasantries rather than looking at the art hanging around them.
