A lady facing right, wearing a white high-waisted gown with ruffled bodice trimmed with lilac ribbons. Her long brown curls are covered with a white scarf adorned with cornflowers. The reverse contains a curl of blond hair over satin fabric.

This is a typical example of Samuel Andrews’ grisaille portraits in profile, which he painted while in Calcutta. These are painted in grey watercolour against a smooth and opaque, brownish background. The technique was the artist’s answer to the relatively inexpensive silhouettes of the period that were rapidly executed in both paint and cut-paper.

This is a copy of a miniature by John Smart of an unknown woman with the initials 'L. V. W.', now in the collections of the V&A. It is possible that Andrews painted this copy as another version of the miniatures for the family.
