The sitter in Monica Winner’s portrait is unidentified and her relationship to the picture-hung interior behind her remains uncertain, however, a strong, dignified presence is evoked by the deeply worked charcoal lines used both to outline and flesh out her figure, as she stares out, dark-eyed, at the viewer. Her loose clothing with its crossover top and rolled sleeves may be an overall, suggesting that perhaps she has been working and, now, released from her labours, is at rest, her crossed hands in enforced idleness in her lap.
