Roy rented number 3 Porthmeor Studios, on Back Road West, whose great windows face Porthmeor Beach. Porthmeor Window depicts two contrasting scenes. The right-hand panel appears to show one of the spectacular sunsets that often occur during the summer months, while the left-hand panel may be a wild winter scene, when it can be difficult to differentiate between the sea and the vast sky. In 1994 he told writer Marion Whybrow for her book 'Studio – Artists in their workplace St Ives': 'Through the window I keep watch on that most elemental of forces, the Atlantic. I witness it in all of its moods, from calm against the most brilliant of blue skies to the most terrifying chaotic seas, with a pewter backdrop. My studio window gives me a most privileged view of the reality of timeless nature which imparts a sense of wonder and scale'.
