London-born landscape painter Richard Croft studied at Bromley College of Art and Brighton College of Arts and Crafts. He settled in Belfast in 1959 and taught art in Annadale Grammar School for many years. Croft’s landscapes are characterised by simplified shapes and patterns and by pale tones (although after moving to Dundrum in 1984, his colour range has become warmer and more vibrant). His images tend to be concentrated in the centre of the canvas as he likes the idea of space around an image.
