Although he was born in America, Kitaj built his career in Britain after studying at the Ruskin School of Drawing in Oxford on a GI scholarship in 1958. He entered the Royal College of Art in the early 1960s, where he formed a close relationship with fellow student David Hockney, and influenced a generation of younger artists later associated with the Pop Art movement in Britain. He was also a central figure in the revival of interest in figurative painting in Britain in the 1970s.

This recent painting is a posthumous portrait of the American poet, Laura (Riding) Jackson, who died in 1991.
