A monumental Japanese bronze study of an eagle, with its wings outstretched, an open beak and gilt detailing on the eyes. It is gazing down onto the bronze base which is cast with monkeys clambering on an ivy- and linzhi-covered gnarled wood stump. The embossed signature on the piece reads 'Dai nihon suzuki masayoshi zō' which translates as 'Made by Suzuki Masayoshi of Great Japan'. The subject of the casting is the world's largest and most powerful (and increasingly rare) eagle, the Philippine Monkey-eating Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi), which was mainly a native of the islands of Luzon and Mindanao.
