The McDonnell Douglas Phantom was the most powerful fixed-wing fighter aircraft ever embarked on a Royal Navy aircraft carrier. Its weight meant that it was dependent upon HMS 'Ark Royal's' steam catapult for the propulsion needed to launch it safely into flight. The Phantom was the last conventional fixed-wing fighter aircraft used by the Royal Navy. HMS 'Ark Royal' was decommissioned in December 1978.
