Furlonger's dramatic 'Peace Memorial' comprises three tall pieces of rough-hewn Cumbrian blue slate rising from a raised bed of upended slates. The memorial (to all wars) represents those lost in war and is a potent and striking symbol of peace. Emphasising peace, the artist is challenging the usual conventions surrounding the notions of war memorials. Each rising slate is carved by Furlonger with poems and peace messages. The main sculptured work is bedded into a shallow plinth. The memorial is surrounded by a low, protective metal rail made by renowned local artist blacksmith, Brian Russell. The low rail serves to protect the upended slates embedded in the base of the sculpture.
