A philanthropist, connoisseur and bibliophile, Mellon was the son of an American financier father and English mother. His love of English paintings and books led to the founding of the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven and the Paul Mellon Foundation for British Art in London. One of the most notable racehorse owners of the century, he is remembered particularly for the outstandingly successful 'Mill Reef'.
