In the centre middleground rises the seventeenth-century castle, as imagined by Dawson. On the left of the picture is a plateau of land, where the main groups of figures are assembled. In the foreground, a horseman gallops up to the plateau, while a group of women and a cavalier survey the scene. Behind this small group is a platoon of troops, their pikes raised n the air, facing the major group of figures. Assembled by the Castle drawbridge is Charles I on a white horse. He and his mounted followers are watching the raising of the standard. Other men, on foot, stand nearby. Behind the Castle stretches a panoramic view of Nottingham. At the bottom of the picture are several horsemen riding up the rocky track that leads up to the drawbridge. Bystanders watch them at the side of the road.
