This portrait is of the artist's friend Alan Rankin (1931–2008), the noted Edinburgh antiquarian bookseller. Rankin himself was a close friend and confidant of Ian Hamilton Finlay from the time of Finlay’s earliest years in Edinburgh and was the source for much of the material in Finlay’s library.
