This piece was acquired for the Scarborough Collections in 2016 after a retrospective of Sonia Lawson’s work at the Mercer Art Gallery, Harrogate. At the time Lawson had decided to offer some of her works to public collections in Yorkshire and we were invited to choose a work on display. Scarborough Art Gallery chose this piece as it compliments other strong colourists in the collection such as Zdzislaw Ruszkowski and Matthew Smith. Lawson’s treatment of colour and the textures she creates with the paint, however, is different from anything else held within our art collections.
