During the restoration of Exeter Guildhall's Elizabethan facade in 1970–1971, most of the cornice of the lower stage and the thin panels of the dado of the first floor stage were replaced with Portland stone slabs. Three of the removed blocks were found to bear earlier carvings on their rear faces, having been redressed and reused on the building. The carvings had been damaged, the highest parts of the relief having been shaved off and the detail cut away in the reshaping of the block. The presence of these carved blocks demonstrates that much material must have been reused in the building in 1592–1594. The style of the carvings is uniformly late medieval and would not be incompatible with a date in the 1480s.
