The painter has aimed at depicting a happy, as well as reverent scene: each face has a happy and content expression.
The painting has so far not been identified either as to its country of origin or its artist. The picture relies on the Renaissance tradition of night scene painting rather than on the more obvious Caravaggistic tradition. The treatment of the figures and the fall of light point to an artist familiar with the Italian tradition rather than a northern one. (Wright, 2002, p.47)
