Mother and daughter, wearing their best clothes and lace with their hair in fashionable ringlets, are posed in front of a curtain partly drawn aside to show the bridge and mountainous pass of Aberglaslyn. Married in 1837, Jane was the first wife of John Jones of Ynysgain, Criccieth. Anne was her fourth of seven children and the eldest of three daughters. Jane died in 1849 aged 41 and her husband remarried in 1852, a marriage in which a seventh child was conceived. The painting appears to be influenced by the newly fashionable portrait photography of the period. Jane is portrayed in a black dress with a hint of sorrowful seriousness, gently clasping her eagerly sweet daughter. The painting by an unknown artist might possibly have been done after Jane’s death – the neoclassical shell cameo pinning her lace pelerine depicts a sorrowing female.
