A monk carries a large stone on his shoulders and represents a local myth of a wealthy and strong monk was punished for some misdemeanour by being sentenced to carry a stone as far as he could from Glasgow and wherever the stone fell (or when an angel whispered to him) he was to build a church at his own expense. The resulting church is Old Monkland Kirk, and half of the alleged stone can still be seen in the entrance. The monk is also found on the town's coat of arms. The town's motto translates from Latin as 'to work is to pray'.
