This is part of a group of five portraits of the Davis family, all painted by Thomas Beach. Originally from Dorset, Beach trained in London in the studio of Joshua Reynolds. From 1771 to 1784 he was based in Bath. This was an excellent place for a portrait painter to earn a good living, as many of the wealthy visitors who came to take spa treatment had portraits painted during their stay.
