In this portrait painted shortly after her marriage to her second husband, Julian Suilvan de Vismes, the artist has adapted her features to conform to the mid-Victorian ideal of female beauty. Apparently at one point a higher neckline was painted over the sitter’s décolletage, reflecting the more restrictive moral code that followed the death of Prince Albert.
