The striking photographs of Senegalese artist Omar Victor Diop (b. Dakar, Senegal) capture modern African sensibilities, and often focus on a recasting of history, the representation of diasporic experiences and global politics of black resistance. In 2018, Autograph commissioned Diop to produce a new self-portrait responding to a key moment in black British history, a celebration of the 70th anniversary of the arrival of the HMT 'Empire Windrush'. Here, Diop reinterprets a photograph from 1949 of a group of men waiting outside the Ministry of Labour & National Service in Liverpool. Diop wanted to capture the essence of this moment of change, hope and anticipation, as a resistance to the harsh realities these men faced: reimagining this moment in history differently and to celebrate the African lineages in the diaspora.
