The artist said about this piece in 2007: "Some years ago, my mother from a mining family handed over to me a miners lamp given to her by a brother who had spent a working lifetime underground at Shotton Colliery in County Durham. I did not realise that the accompanying memories would spark an interest into the life and times of my grandparents. Recently retired, I had already chosen painting as a hobby but not the technique or the subject. Images were already forming from my mother's recollections and acrylic paints were showing promise for the dark sombre colours. The choices of techniques and subject came together and where better to start than with my lamp, a still life. This picture gave me encouragement enough to start a series illustrating the lifestyle of the coal mining families of that era.
