Dr Pringle practised in Nottinghamshire for over 30 years. He was appointed to the Chair of General Practice at the University of Nottingham in 1993. On his retirement, he was made an Emeritus Professor. He is Strategic Director of PRIMIS, a business unit of the University of Nottingham that provides a range of primary care health informatics services to the health sector and research community. Active in the charitable field, he was a trustee of Arthritis Research UK, and chair of CGL a charity providing treatment and support to over 55,000 vulnerable people in England and Wales. He is also a trustee of the Picker Institute Europe, an organisation that aims to make patients views count in healthcare. He is shown standing, without presidential robes or chain of office in front of the fireplace in 30 Euston Square, the home of the RCGP since 2012.
