A truncated stone obelisk with numerous bronze attachments, the memorial is a contemporary variant of the historic 'rostral' or victory column. It is the Scottish Merchant Navy memorial to the lives of all its sailors lost in peace and war. It illustrates trade of all kinds throughout the world, wherever Scottish ships went. Although not commissioned or designed as a war memorial, it has to some extent become adopted as such.

The sculptor and designer was Jill Watson, who modelled and finished all the bronze, including the boat capital. Graciela Ainsworth gilded the small decoration on the boat capital, the casting was by Powderhall Bronze and the masonry by Bob Thompson.
