Shortly after moving to Britain from Nigeria, ten-year-old Damilola Taylor began attending the Oliver Goldsmith Primary School. Three months later, on the evening of 27th November 2000, while passing through the North Peckham Estate on his way home, he was attacked, stabbed in the leg with a knife and left to bleed to death. Two teenagers were arrested, put on trial at the Old Bailey, but then, in early 2002, cleared of all charges – murder, manslaughter and assault with intent to rob. Nobody since has been convicted of Damilola Taylor’s killing. The memorial is an abstract design, based loosely on the motif of a bird taking flight and evoking the idea of the phoenix, the traditional symbol of rebirth, ‘of hope rising out of tragedy’.
