At the top a cobbler works in the hollow oak, with a herdsman tending his swine just above Joanna Peppitt’s three Labradors. The roots of the tree entwine in a Celtic knot on the post, continued on the other sides of the post, which also include on left and right the crown of Charlemagne, from whose father Pepin le Bref, the family is presumed to have derived its name. In addition, on the left is a scallop shell representing St. James and, on the right, a carved lily on a raised wooden block above woodcarving tools for St. Joseph and near the base a Bible with a fish for St. John Fisher. On the rear face is a carving of an eagle with a halo carrying a Bible in its talons representing St. John the Evangelist.
