This is a large family portrait of Mary Phoebe Spencer Nelson Taylor and their two daughters, Phoebe Elizabeth Taylor and Mary Ann Taylor. Mary Phoebe Spencer Nelson Taylor was the sister of Isaac Spencer, wholesale druggist, Sheriff of York in 1806, and Lord Mayor of York in 1812 and 1822. She is shown with her two daughters, reclining on a gilt sofa, against a background of rich red drapes. She is fashionably attired in a diaphanous dress of the period with an elaborate bonnet tied under her chin and a large cameo ring on her right index finger. Her daughters, one standing, one sitting on her knee, are simply attired in white dresses with blue sashes and hold a bunch of grapes. The inscription with the painting is: 'Graciously lent by the Royal Oak Foundation, New York, to whom it was given by Mrs John F Haskins, Brunswick, Maine, a great, great granddaughter of the sitter'.
