A low relief sculpture depicting a female in late sixteenth century costume, including a tiara-like headdress, corseted waist and the upper third of a petticoat. Historically identified as a grave marker from post-medieval Brinkburn Priory, it is now known to have belonged to Cadogan Hodgson and was first seen in the pre-1887 photograph outside the west end of the priory church where it remained until the site was taken into guardianship in 1965. Cadogan removed this sculpture from an ‘old cottage on the Moor Edge’ which had been inhabited for three or four generations by the Grey/Gray family. According to Cadogan, a Mary Gray (? sic) who ‘flourished around 1820’ prayed to the sculpture and the sculpture became known as ‘Mary Grey’s God’.
