The sitter was baptised in St Nicholas's Church, Worcester on 24 June 1747, the son of Dr John Wall, and attended Winchester College from 1760–1763. He matriculated at New College as Founder's Kin in 1763 (aged 16) and remained a Fellow until 1778 when he married. He became Clinical Professor of Medicine in Oxford in 1785. Boswell's 'Life of Dr Johnson' noted a genial tea party held by Dr Johnson for 'Dr Wall, physician at Oxford', in 1784 and described him as a 'learned, ingenious and pleasing gentleman'. He died on 21 June 1824 and is buried in the North Cloister near the tower door. His widow lived in a house in St Giles until her death in 1841.
