Made from wood with ceramic tiles inset, 'Blackton' is one of four Marker Posts identifying and sited in four outlying yet distinct areas surrounding, but still part of, the village of Eggleston, often regarded as the gateway to Upper Teesdale. The first two markers, at 'Folly Top' and 'Hill Top', are on the heights which bracket the village, while the other two, 'Blackton' and 'Egglesburn' are farther afield. The posts each have two of their four sides showing local points of interest illustrated on a series of ceramic tiles made by villagers in dedicated workshops.
