The artist, Michiel Jansz. van Miereveldt was born in the Delft and was one of the most successful Dutch portraitists of the 17th century. His works are predominantly head and shoulder portraits, often against a monochrome background. The viewer is drawn towards the sitter’s face by light accents revealed by clothing. The portrait has been in the possession of the Williams family for many years, and has been gifted to Usher Gallery by the wife of the late great-grandson of J. G. Williams. John George Williams was born in Lincoln on 15th December 1838 and died 8th January 1926. He was probably the oldest practising solicitor in the country, having been continuously engaged in legal work for 64 years. He was the senior partner of the firm Williams and Glanfield, solicitors in Lincoln, and followed his father into the family firm.
