The title for this painting was inspired by a painting by Oswald Garside, RI in Warrington Art Gallery, 'Autumns Hollow Sigh in the Sere Wood', which depicts the edge of a beech wood with crows and evokes a feeling of winter loneliness. However, the place that inspired this painting was a small wood and pond at Causeway Bridges near Winwick just north of Warrington. The water was shining through the trunks and twigs and Gee made sketches and paintings there. In the studio the painting took on a life of its own and does not resemble the place as seen in real life. The work is painted in a somewhat loose style that Gee uses, suggesting things rather than defining elements in detail.
