Sarah Grand was originally called Frances Bellenden-Clarke. Married at 17 to a much older widower, she left him when she was 34 and devoted herself to writing, campaigning for votes for women and lecturing on women’s issues. In 1893, distancing herself from her husband, she changed her name to Sarah Grand. This portrait was painted three years later. She moved to Bath in 1920 and served as Lady Mayoress there.

Alfred Praga was sent to Paris to study medicine, but spent his time looking at the paintings in the Louvre instead. This inspired him to become an artist. He lived in London for most of his life, working mainly as a portrait and miniature painter.
