Manson met Lucien Pissarro in 1910 and they became good friends. They later went on painting expeditions together and, as a member of staff of the Tate Gallery from 1912 to 1938, Manson was influential in promoting Pissarro's interests. This informal portrait of Pissarro reading and smoking a pipe may date from August 1913, when they rented Western House, near Rye and painted in the vicinity. Manson painted another portrait of Lucien in 1939.
