Sue Thornton is a former lecturer on the level zero Foundation course while also teaching at other colleges across Hampshire. She studied at Plymouth and Cardiff Colleges of Art and Design and Goldsmiths College, University of London. She now lives in Hertfordshire and continues to work as an independent artist and is widely exhibited. She has said of her work: "When I was at Cardiff College of Art and Goldsmiths in the 70s, I concentrated on abstract painting, but since then I have become more interested in studying my first love – drawing. This interest has developed into life drawing, portraits and landscape." "Wild and quirky landscape – ports or harbours – are a source of constant inspiration. Working outside gives me the opportunity to respond to the constantly changing light conditions, using a fast, reactive style.
"I have often been told that my life drawings are like landscapes. I really enjoy painting characterful faces. I go through the same painting process as for landscapes, but to a lesser degree, due to the modified (interior) light conditions."
