Created to coincide with Windrush Day, a commemoration in the United Kingdom held on 22nd June to honour the contributions of Caribbean migrants, this artwork depicts lyrics from the song 'London is the Place for Me', a song by Aldwyn Roberts under his calypso stage name Lord Kitchener, typeset in my Empire Windrush typeface. Roberts sang the first two stanzas of 'London is the Place for Me' on camera for reporters upon arrival at Tilbury Docks on the HMT 'Empire Windrush', and was recorded by Pathé News cameras (though he did not record the song until 1951). This artwork celebrates the optimism, positivity and hopefulness of those pioneers aboard the Windrush, in the face of all the challenges to come. It celebrates the contributions and sacrifice of the migrants, who helped build London into the city it is today.
