The two monumental gate piers are each decorated with a pair of fluted Doric columns, an entablature, frieze, monogram, and garland of flowers in high relief. Above the entablature on both sides is a panel depicting an arrangement of war trophies including swords, arrows, helmets, standards, shields and sceptres, surmounted by the figure of a stylised lion with curled mane and open mouth. The lions may refer to the Labours of Hercules, a constant theme throughout the sculptural decoration of Hampton Court executed in the reign of William and Mary. The gate piers were originally part of Wren’s plan for a grand entrance from Bushy Park and were intended to hold a pair of eighteen-foot monumental iron gates by Tijou. The gates remained undelivered in 1714 on the death of Queen Anne.
